Dear Friend,
Believe it or not, discovering what may well be a real-life modern-day “fountain of youth” started in the produce aisle.
I was grocery shopping with my beautiful wife, Dawn and a young man approached me.
"Didn't you used to be Tom Terwilliger, the bodybuilding champion?” he asked, his tone skeptical.
Then before I could answer, the young man let out a sigh, shook his head and walked off.
My lovely wife was suddenly super-focused on picking out the best avocados. She couldn’t even meet my eyes. I turned bright red and my stomach revolted.
“I’ll meet you in the car,” I said and bolted from the store.
I was humiliated. I mean I hadn’t just been a “bodybuilding champion” — I had been Mr. America, for crying out loud, and was a respected fitness expert!
When we finally got back home, I went upstairs and took a really good look at myself in the mirror.
And maybe for the first time in years, I really saw myself.
I mean I still looked pretty good... for a guy my age.
But the reflection fell far short of my “Mr. America” days.
I’m not talking about just a few gray hairs and wrinkles.
I’m talking about a little too much weight in the wrong places, a lot less muscle mass, a weak, defeated looking posture I didn't even recognize as mine... and feeling like most of my “get up and go” had got up and went.
Any illusions I may have had that I was still in OK shape and looking young-ISH were shattered.
I felt old, defeated, and beaten. I wanted to quit... and for a few weeks that's exactly what I did…
Then, inspired by my wife, I picked myself up and doubled down on my efforts to get back in shape, clinging to the familiar pillars that enabled me to become Mr. America some 25 years earlier: the workouts, the clean eating, the supplements — hoping against hope that they would be my “fountain of youth.”
Month after month I kept trying new workout routines and nutrition plans, hoping for a miracle. But nothing seemed to work, and I just ended up more frustrated and discouraged.
It was painful, frustrating and depressing to realize that the old me was getting farther and farther out of reach.
In fact, as soon as I turned 50, I started struggling with the same challenges we all face as we age: decreased mental clarity, lagging energy, slowing metabolism, weight gain, muscle loss, general weakness, aches, pains, stiffness, poor sleep and not being at all happy with the guy in the mirror.
So I went to my doctor and had them run the full testing gamut:
- Hormones
- Blood Lipids
- Cognition
- Nutrition Panel
I even had them check to see if I was “pre-diabetic”.
Right down the line, everything checked out just fine. At least, “for my age,” as I was told.
I was left with no idea what the heck else I was supposed to be doing or what was missing.
And my Doctor was ZERO help. “You’re just getting older,” he reminded me. Several times.
But I wasn’t willing to accept that as the final answer.
